So you want to work from home. You’re interested in commuting 10 feet to work. You really want to work in your pajamas or sweatpants. Got it.

And for many people, the search for a remote, work-from-home, or virtual position begins and ends right there. They have no idea of where or how to start looking for a job that will offer flexible work.

I’ve been there. And I’ve been able to find and network with a connected, remote workforce to help navigate the virtual rat race from home.

I’ve blogged about websites that can help you search for a work-from-home job. I used Flexjobs to find my most recent position as an online proofreader and editor. I’ve also blogged about types of jobs that offer work-from-home options.

When most people think of work-from-home positions, they automatically think of phone telemarketers and customer service jobs. But many of the positions from the companies below are skilled jobs, including Human Resource Specialist, Product Manager, Salesforce Engineer and Senior Application Architect.

When you click on a company’s career page, type in search terms or keywords such as “flexible”, “remote”, “virtual”, and “telecommute” to get tailored results.

Job Tip: Almost any job you apply for will ask for your resume and cover letter, so have them ready. Take note of keywords and phrases from the description of the job you’re interested in and include them in your resume if it fits your skills and experience. Also tailor your cover letter to fit the particular job you’re interested in.

10 Companies That Offer Work-From-Home Jobs

Amazon – The online retail hub recently announced a minimum base pay of $15 an hour for its workforce, including part-time and seasonal warehouse workers beginning November 1. The company’s virtual jobs include Customer Service, IT Support, Software Development, Human Resources, and others. Click here to see the job descriptions.

Teach for America – Yes, this national nonprofit teaching corps also offers skilled virtual positions. Some of the roles require employees to live in the region or city where they have a hub. And some of the jobs just require a good internet connection. Convergys – This company calls itself a leader in “customer service outsourcing.” The bulk of its workforce seems to be remote and their listed job openings include customer support consultants, Work-at-Home Sales and Service Reps, Call Center Associates and Technical Support. UnitedHealth Group – This healthcare management company offers mostly telecommute roles, which means a few days of the week, you have to put on clothes and go into their office. I typed in “telecommute” into their Careers search page and 627 job openings popped up. Most of them require you to live near a city where they have a hub. Click here to start your own search. 

Humana – This healthcare management firm offers a variety of work-from-home positions. Their careers page is a little difficult to navigate so your best bet is to search by state or locations and then look at the positions offered in your area.

Salesforce – This company’s cloud-based technology platform means they have a workforce that can log-in from anywhere in the world. A search for remote jobs on their site turned up positions in Melbourne, Australia and Helsinki. Your best bet is to search by job title and include “remote” in the search function.

Cardinal Health – Another healthcare management company, virtual job postings include Clinical Specialty Consultants and Field Service Technicians. Search by job category or type in “virtual” in the search tab.

Sitel – This company offers a 100% virtual employee based environment to support companies in various industries. These positions are mostly as Call Center Associates.

Enterprise Holdings – The rental car and leasing firm that now also owns Alamo and National offers customer service and field representative positions that are work from home. Click here to search by state.
