Toddlers have baggage. And if you’ve ever taken a plane or a road trip with these little people, you realize that you’re more likely to forget your own essential items than leave home without something they need.
I just returned from visiting my family in the Midwest, a two-hour flight from the East Coast. As a frequent flier, I’m always on the look out for ways to carry LESS STUFF when I have my toddlers in tow.
During this trip, I kept my carry-ons down to a backpack and a foldable travel cart, used to transport the car seat and the baby through the airport and to the gate. And I’m so glad I bought that cart because it made life so much easier.
It goes without saying that a tablet, well-stocked with movies, cartoons, YouTube videos and whatever keeps your child at peace, should already be packed. Right next to the diapers and extra wipes.
But here are a few more tools to help transport the babies and ALL OF THEIR STUFF safely and conveniently, without paying extra bag fees on a plane or taking up more space on a road trip.
- This Britax Car Seat Travel Cart makes taking your car seat through an airport a breeze. You can quickly attach it to the cart just like you latch a seat to your car, using all three anchors. You can also put your child in the car seat while it’s on the cart and quickly pull them through the airport just like your suitcase. SWEET!
2. If you decide to check a carrier or a car seat at the gate, this inexpensive travel bag is excellent to protect it from getting soiled and keep it clean while it’s stowed away. I remember checking my car seat once and watching it get rained on outside as it was taken to the bottom of the plane. Problem solved!
3. Staying clean is always a challenge with toddlers. In addition to baby wipes, my portable Thieves Spray and hand sanitizers from Young Living are my favorite hygienic sidekicks.

4. Potty-training a toddler? There’s no convenient way to do this, really. But this Infantino Compact Potty makes it a bit easier. It can stand up on its own with a bag in it or you can put it on top of a public toilet seat to minimize germs. It folds up and comes with a carrying bag for easy transport.
5. Can you ship anything ahead of time? I shipped this booster seat to my mom’s house in the Midwest so there’s a convenient way to feed the baby at the table once we arrive and I never have to lug it through an airport. It may also be a good idea to ship a portable “Pack and Play” for the same reasons.
6. A backseat organizer is necessary in general when transporting toddlers and children. There’s a lot to choose from but I like this one I found on Amazon. Look for organizers that have good ratings, hundreds of reviews, and pictures posted by reviewers.
Have a safe (and sane) trip!
