This morning, our almost 3-year-old son, Leo, was very excited to take his two Lego men to school with him. They are both named Eddie. One has a blue hat. The other has an orange hat. Before we left the house we could only find the one with the blue hat (!!!) but Leo was committed to a search: “Eddieeee, where are youuuu?” he kept saying in his wittle voice. After a few minutes of looking around we finally found the other Eddie, the one with the orange hat. He was chillin’ with the rest of the Legos under Leo’s table.
When we got to school, Leo saw one of his teachers as the elevator doors opened. In his excitement, Eddie with the orange hat fell down the elevator shaft.
The look on Leo’s face as he realized what had happened crushed me, y’all. The tears. The sobs. SOBS! “Eddieeeee”. Sympathetic glances from other parents as they walked by. It took 15-20 minutes to calm him down. And even still, when I finally left, his face was still long and sad. I made sure he knew Eddie with the blue hat was still with him and tucked it away in the pocket of his hoodie.
So here I am working and eating lunch – and in my own emotions about Eddie, lol. He was a good Lego man. And thinking about Leo and how he’s coping with such a loss at such a young age. And also thinking about where to find another Eddie with the orange hat 😉 Sigh. RIP Eddie with the orange hat.
